The Human Proteome
Organisation (HUPO) was launched on February 9, 2001 and has a mandate of
fostering international proteomic initiatives to better understand human
disease. Presently there are eleven
scientific initiatives each of which is based in one country, but is
international in scope. Each year we host an Annual
World Congress as well as numerous regional activities.
Within this section are
details regarding: the background of HUPO, a glossary of proteomic and
scientific terms; HUPO's organizational structure; how to become a member;
international proteomic societies; sponsors and sponsorship opportunities;
logos and downloadable material; and job postings.

The American Society for
Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) was formed in 1969 to promote and disseminate
knowledge of mass spectrometry and allied topics. Membership includes over
7,500 scientists involved in research and development. Members come from
academic, industrial and governmental laboratories. Their interests
include advancement of techniques and instrumentation in mass
spectrometry, as well as fundamental research in chemistry, geology,
forensics, biological sciences and physics.
ASMS sponsors the
Annual
Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics
that is attended by more than 6,500 scientists. Nearly 3,000
papers are presented as posters and talks. ASMS
also has a peer reviewed monthly journal with a comprehensive range of
research and development in mass spectrometry, Journal
of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry,

The British
Society for Proteome Research
(BSPR), is a registered incorporated charity (Registered Company Number
6319769, UK
Charity Number 1121692) and aims to advance the science of
proteomics, to further public education therein and to promote study and
research work in proteomics and related subjects for the public benefit.
The BSPR represents
both the Human Proteome
Organization (HUPO) and the European
Proteomics Association (EuPA) in the UK and is affiliated to the Biosciences
Federation (BSF) and the Institute
of Biology (IoB). In addition, the Society has retained its
affiliation to the International
Council for Electrophoresis Societies (ICES).
The objectives of the
British Society for Proteome Research (BSPR) are to advance the science of
proteomics and to promote the study and research work in this and related
areas for the benefit of all. It enables scientists working in this field
to keep up-to-date with current developments both nationally and
internationally and to meet and exchange ideas with other workers. Unlike
many learned societies we have members from a wide range of organisations
including industry and the health service, as well as research and
academic institutions.

The HPI program stopped
in November 2008 after the release of the first complete set of human
proteins. This annotation program has been replaced by the program CD2
(Core Data for Chordata).
The Human Proteome
Initiative (HPI) aims to annotate all known human protein sequences, as
well as their orthologous sequences in other mammals, according to the
quality standards of UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot. In addition to accurate
sequences, we strive to provide, for each protein, a wealth of information
that includes the description of its function, domain structure,
subcellular location, similarities to other proteins, etc. About
21'000 human genes encode one million different proteins.

The ProteomExchange
consortium has been set up to provide a single point of submission to
proteomics repositories, and encourage the data exchange and sharing of
identifiers between the repositories so that the community may easily find
datasets in the participating repositories.
|
The
Protein Structure Initiative (PSI) is a federal, university and industry
effort aimed at dramatically reducing the costs and lessening the time it
takes to determine a three-dimensional protein structure. The initial goal
of the PSI was to make the three-dimensional, atomic-level structures of
most proteins easily obtainable from knowledge of their corresponding DNA
sequences. During the PSI:Biology phase, highly organized networks of
investigators will apply the new paradigm of high-throughput structure
determination, which was successfully developed during the earlier phases
of the PSI, to study a broad range of important biological and biomedical
problems.

strengthen and promote fundamental research and applications, as well as
education and training in all areas of proteomics throughout Europe. EuPA
is a non-profit organisation.
|

| The Proteomics
Research Group (PRG) is a volunteer scientific organization
dedicated to sharing knowledge about the analysis of proteins. The

interests were focused on teaching and research in Protein Chemistry and
Proteomics. The Community is open to everyone interested in Proteome
Sciences in all of their scientific, technological, industrial, commercial
and educational aspects. Thus, every citizen, specially scientists,
professors, students, business people as well as company, university,
government and non-governement organization workers having any link to
Proteomics are invited to take part.

Our aim:
The Swedish
Proteomics Society (SPS) intends to promote activities within the Proteomics
field in Sweden and also acts as an interface to the international Proteomics
programs.
Organisation:
The birth of the Swedish Proteomics Society in late 2002 was a natural
consequence of the high interest in Sweden for protein expression profiling
linked to a strong position in biomedichal-, biotech, and biology area in
general, that combines genomics, protein chemistry and molecular biology.
The Swedish
Proteomics Society is currently a part of the Swedish
Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Apotekarsocieteten). Scientists from
different parts of Sweden and also Denmark are active in the committee (listed
below).

a nonprofit scientific and educational organization founded in 1990, provides a
forum for advancing and promoting knowledge of the chemistry and biology of
peptides. The approximately one thousand members of the Society come from North
America and from more than thirty other countries throughout the world.
Establishment of the American Peptide Society was a result of the rapid
worldwide growth that has occurred in peptide-related research, and of the
increasing interaction of peptide scientists with virtually all fields of
science.

Taiwan
Proteomic Society
Taiwan
Proteomic Society (TPS) was established in 2003. Andrew H.-J. Wang, currently
the vice president of Academia Sinica,
Taiwan
, organized the very first society member meeting in
Taipei
. Approximately 40 founding members participated in the first meeting. The main
focus of the meeting was to promote awareness of emerging proteomics research to
the scientific communities in
Taiwan
and to create educational infrastructure for college-level students in learning
basic knowledge in proteomics. The meeting was successfully echoed by his
colleagues and Ministry of Education, resulting proteomics courses taught in
many universities and a textbook published in Chinese on proteomics prepared by
a cooperative effort from scientists in
Taiwan
. During May 15th-17th in 2004, TPS hosted its first
conference, 3rd International Proteomics Conference 2004 (IPC’03),
1st Taiwan Proteomics Conference, Joint Meeting of AOHUPO 2004 (1).
The conference was a joint meeting organized by TPS and Asia Oceania HUPO (AOHUPO).
Interestingly, the conference was held in 2004 yet termed as IPC’03 because it
was supposed to happen in 2003 but delayed due to severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in southestern
asia
