from the Beltway
We again look at Emerging BioTech, this week from the perspective of proteomics.
This field is the logical next step after genomics and may see similar
growth. Guests are Dr. Stefan Unger, Director of Drug Discovery at Frost
and Sullivan; Mats Johnson VP of Proteomics at Amersham Pharmacia BioTech;
Bob Erwin, CEO of Large Scale Biology Corp.; and Jeff Williams, CEO of
Genomic Solutions.

Trends in Target Validation Technologies to Cure Major Human Diseases
Proteomics is helping to identify targets or marker proteins causing or
specific to a
human disease pathogenesis via serial measurements from accessible compartments
(e.g., body fluids such as serum, urine, synovial fluid, CSF).

the Genome: Biotech's Next Holy Grail: Now, companies are racing to decipher
the human protein set by Ellen Licking with John Carey and Amy Barrett
Even with the new genomics technologies, it takes 10 or 15 years to get
a drug out of the lab--to evaluate it in animal and human trials and get
it onto the market. Proteomics promises to shorten that to perhaps a few
years by helping researchers identify safer, more effective candidate
medicines earlier in the drug-development process. ''It will go so far
beyond the genome project, we'll be delighted,'' predicts Arnold Oliphant,
vice-president for functional genomics at Salt Lake City biotech company
Myriad Genetics Inc. (MYGN).

D & MD Publications Proteomics:
An Overview and Analysis of Current and Emerging Technologies, Competitive
Landscape and the Market Environment
Unlike other disciplines in the biomedical sciences, proteomics came about
by way of necessity--the need for identifying and ascribing biology to
proteins in vivo became important (driven of course by the genomics paradigm).
Therefore, proteomics is very technology-rich, with an abundance of techniques
and systems for protein identification and characterization. Since technology
dominates proteomics, the majority of D&MD's Proteomics Report is
dedicated to discussing the various technologies composing this ensemble.

Competitive Environment for Proteomics in Europe
Proteomics is an emerging discipline that seeks to ascribe functionality
to the various
protein-based biological pathways in the body. Proteomics has gained significance
in recent years given the trend towards rational methods in drug discovery.
These methods involve the characterization of genes that play a role in
various biological pathways and the subsequent characterization of the
proteins involved in these pathways.
